Writer's Notebook
This year, Year 6 will be using the Writer's Notebook approach to writing this year where each student has a Writer's Notebook that helps them to brainstorm, record ideas, and experiment with words and thinking strategies.
The thinking that a student produces in their Writer's Notebook is inspired by a 'seed' which could be a drawing, photo, question or anything that generates writing ideas! From this seed, students are supported to think about a range of topics and genres that they could write about before choosing a topic and beginning to write. The development of writing is supported through group and individual writing conferences.
We encourage students to bring in 'seeds' from home to assist them in shaping their writing.
Check out the following ideas for gathering seeds:

When editing writing, follow the 3 stages to get better as an independent writer!
1. Meaning and structure
- Does my writing make sense?
- Is my message clear?
- Does my writing sound right?
- Are my ideas in order?
2. Sentences and structure
- Have I used the best words I can?
- How can I rewrite my sentences to make them more interesting and varied?
3. Spelling and punctuation
- Proofread your work for spelling, punctuation and grammar.
